About the Project

The Julia Morgan Building Restoration Project will transform our historic space into a fully modernized center for critical community services. Once complete, the project will expand essential programs, including job training, food distribution, child care, and women’s health services, ensuring greater support for women, families, and seniors. New transitional housing units will offer safe shelter for women who are victims of domestic violence, and infrastructure upgrades will make the building accessible and functional for everyone. Your support will allow us to create a space where members of our community can rebuild their lives, gain stability, and thrive.

History and Restoration

The YWCA Harbor Area building, located at 437 West 9th Street in San Pedro, California, was designed by renowned architect Julia Morgan and has been a cornerstone of community support since 1918. In 1958, a two-story dormitory was added to the complex to provide housing for women in need, but it has been out of commission for more than two decades after falling into disrepair. This restoration project will allow the YWCA Harbor Area to continue its mission of empowering women and families while preserving a critical piece of Los Angeles history.
